Een vreemde brief

Het zal mij niet anders vergaan dan anderen. De post die mij nog langs reguliere weg bereikt, dus in mijn brievenbus belandt, mag al lang geen naam meer hebben. Noch qua omvang noch inhoudelijk stelt het iets voor. Maar soms komt er toch nog een brief tot je die dan ineens niet alleen opvalt, maar nog meer intrigeert. Zo kreeg ik gisteren een schrijven bezorgd, waarbij ik allereerst mijn wenkbrauwen moest fronsen en me vervolgens afvroeg wat ik ermee moest. Afzender was Alvaro Cabeza & Asociados uit Madrid, welk advocatenkantoor zich met de volgende tekst tot mij richtte:

Dear Hamilton R.

Before I proceed, I must first apologize for this unsolicited letter to you. I am aware that this is certainly not a conventional way of approach to establish a relationship of trust, but you will realize the need for my action as you read on. My name is Barrister Manuel Conthe of Alvaro Cabeza & Asociados, Corporat/Financial Law, Intellectual Property Law, Ligitation and Commercial Arbitration Law. Actually, I got your contact information through your country’s public records while searching for a last name similar to my late client Engineer Ella Hamilton. an expatriate engineer who worked with the Mining and Smelting Company (Asturiana de Zinc S.A) here in Spain for thirteen years. She died along with her family in the Valencia metro accident which occurred on 4 July 2006. Before her death she dhe deposited a trunk box containing $ 6.7M (six million and sevenhundred thousand dollars) in a Vault Company here in Spain as a trunk containing family valuables and did not disclose the content of consignment to the company. The company has mandated me to present any family heir/inheritor for claim before the consignment gets confiscated or reverts to the Bureau of Diplomatic Security, as an unclaimed diplomatic immunity. So I decided to search for asny of my late client’s relative which has been very difficult for me, as she did not declare any other person or relatives in the official paper works of her deposit.

Against this backdrop, my suggestion to you is that I will like you as a foreigner to stand as the next of kin to my late client Engineer Ella Hamilton sine you both share the same last name; with my position as her lawyer I willm now appoint and recognize you as the heir. I will prepare every relevant document that will assist our claims, and facilitate the relase of the consignment. Note that this transaction is 100% risk free. And I guarantee that this transation will be executed under a legitimate arrsangement without the breach of the law, although it might not be justified morally. I will not like you to involve any third party in this transaction, besides i am doing this on my own personal capaity and do not wish to bring my offie into it. Once the trunk box is released to you, I will come over to your country and we shall share in the ratio of 50% for me, 50% for you as your benefit. If this proposal does offend your moral values, please pardon me.
